This book, released as a companion volume to the exhibition "The Maccabees of Sport", is the first ever in the history of the Historical Museum of the City of Cracow to deal with the issue of Jewish sports. The Museum organized a number of exhibitions devoted to the history of sport in Cracow; one of them, launched in 2012, was concerned with the abundant history of Jewish sports clubs. In that context a publication discussing the key aspects of Jewish sporting activity is highly recommendable. The texts included in this volume offer a good insight into the origins and ideology of the Jewish sports in Poland. -- Contents: Foreword / Michal Niezaitowski; About the Exhibition / Piotr Figiela; Origins of the Maccabi World Union and the Maccabiah Games (1900-1939) / Krzysztof Smiechowski; Origins and Development of Structured Jewish Sport in the Polish Territory (1896-1939) / Krzysztof Smiechowski; Activity of ZTS Jutrzenka Krakow and ZKS Makkabi Krakow / Piotr Figiela; Football Sections of Jewish Sports Clubs in Interwar Krakow / Anna Halambiec; Most Eminent Jewish Sportsmen in Non-Jewish Football Clubs in Krakow / Maciej Wladyslaw Belda; Water Sports in Jutrzenka Krakow and Makkabi Krakow Sports Clubs in the Interwar Period 1918-1939 / Michal Luberda; List of Illustrations; Bibliography; Catalogue of Exhibits [pp 209-255].
