This one-of-a-kind book presents firsthand historical perspectives from hospital social workers who have cared for HIV/AIDS patients from the beginning of the epidemic in the early 1980s until the present. The contributors recount their personal and clinical experiences with patients, families, significant others, bureaucracies, and systems during a time of fear, challenge, and extreme caution. Their experiences illustrate the evolution of social work as the development of new programs and treatments increased the life span of HIV/AIDS patients.
