Excerpt from A Collection of English Phrases With Their Idiomatic Gujráti Equivalents The phrases contained in this compilation were dictated at various times in one of our Government English Schools, partly to supply a want which was felt in the mere book-teach ing of English to native students, and partly to assist the com piler himself in acquiring a stock of the commonest and most idiomatic Gujrati expressions. He had been much amused in reading some of the familiar correspondence of his native friends, to see, that the most trivial chit between school-fellows, cousins or brothers, was rarely or never pitched in a key lower than that of the Rambler or Edinburgh Review, and that in the majority of cases it was even Johnson and Macaulay, heightened by touches imitated from the magniloquent Persian of the Mussalman Darbars of India. These sentences then are intended to be entirely collo quial our students get enough of book-language in their classes, and if the compiler is ever set, formal, and bookish, he is so by inadvertency, and in contradiction to his plan and intentions.
