"The significance of Romantic theory in today's literary criticism still remains ambivalent. Though it seems to have been generally acknowledged that there indeed existed a common orientation in Romantic discourse such as the exaltation of spontaneous emotional expression, such a commonality is only a superficial categorisation of the theoretical substrate of the Romantic theory which we attempt to capture.
