This book is one of Ba Jin's ""Torrent Trilogy"", which describes the collapse of the old feudal families and the rebellion of young people. Set in the eight to nine months from the winter of 1920 to the autumn of 1921, this novel reveals the evil of the feudal autocratic system, lays bare the internecine struggle veiled under the warm relationship within a big family, exposes the dissipation and debauchery of the so-called ""decent"" feudal families, and describes how the new ideological trend triggers a generation of youth's awakening and resistance, thereby pronouncing the inevitable collapse of the feudal family.
