Fine airborne particles are considered the most important outdoor air pollutant in British Columbia today, as they can be inhaled into the lungs and remain there for weeks to months. Medical studies indicate such particles are associated with a variety of health effects ranging from severe coughing to premature deaths. The particles originate from both natural sources and human activities. BC Environment has monitored airborne concentrations of these particles at nearly 100 sites since the mid-1980s. This report is the first overview of fine airborne particle measurements made across the province. The assessment is limited to 1990-95 data and primarily to those sites exhibiting good data availability. Information is included on sampling methodology, quality assurance procedures, measures of air quality, and the evaluation of fine airborne particle levels. Results are presented and discussed by region and trends are noted.
