This book chronicles the history of the bakery at 601 West Tenth Avenue in Vancouver and the British Columbia Cancer Research Centre which later came to occupy the building. The story of the building is entwined with the influential and socially prominent members of the Shelly and McGavin families who first established bakeries in Vancouver at the beginning of the last century. With the decline of their bakery empires the building was acquired by the BC Cancer Foundation and came to house the various departments of the BC Cancer Research Centre. The progress of these departments and their researchers is followed from Biophysics and TRIUMF to Genomics and Cancer Genetics in eight chapters. With over 100 illustrations, extensive references to the scientific literature and several biographical sketches of significant individuals, the text is written for both the scientist and the interested lay person. The book concludes with an intriguing look into the future of cancer research and treatment by three of British Columbia's leading cancer researchers.
