Partial cutting, a silvicultural system in which some trees are left standing after logging, leaves workers exposed to hazards & risks associated with felling & yarding under a partial canopy or near reserves. This handbook presents safety guidelines for planning & carrying out partial-cutting silvicultural systems. Starting with general considerations given to partial cutting in the forest development plan, the handbook introduces progressively more detailed planning concepts for partial cutting, from initial layout & design, through to the development of silviculture prescriptions. Finally, it outlines safe operating procedures and provides checklists for conducting actual harvest operations. The procedures cover felling, tree climbing, and cable-, helicopter-, ground-based, and horse-logging methods. The appendix contains information on controlling windthrow.
