This report summarizes the phylogenetic associations for British Columbia rainbow trout populations and makes recommendations for the conservation of this diversity. The summary is based on a recent study of DNA variation combined with older isozyme data, minisatellite data, and information on the geological history of the province. The study revealed distinct mitochondrial DNA lineages which overlap in their geographical range, and a comprehensive hypothesis on the origins of rainbow trout populations in British Columbia is presented which postulates a number of glacial refugia where trout survived the last glaciation.
