"Modernity is usually, and rather stereotypically, linked with an antipathy to local traditions and the past and, in contrast, with leanings towards international, progressive trends. However, there are many examples that interfere with and defy this simplified formula. In the historical context, an original symbiosis of the Modern and the folk -- refrred to in this book as "Modfolk" -- is manifested by the work of architect Dušan Jurkovič, composer Leoš Janáček and applied arts reformer Joseph Vydra. The "Modfolk" exhibition and publication project created for the Jurkovič House, Brno in June 2015 seeks to reinterpret folk traditions through contemporary fashion design. Liběna Rochová with her students from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM) revives the simple cuts and the raw, austere beauty of folk clothing with the use of modern means."--Page 4 of cover.
