This research created a taxonomy for sustainability in highway construction (SHCTaxo), which is comprised of approximately 1000 concepts, in order to support a semantic collaborative environment in construction industry. As part of the e-COGNOS taxonomy, SHCTaxo inherited its skeleton and classified the concepts related to sustainable highway construction into eight main domains: Actor, Process, Product, Resource, Constraints, Mechanism, Basic Concepts and Technical Domain. Object-models for Natural Environmental, Social and Economic Sustainability Systems have been developed using UML. To evaluate the effectiveness of the SHCTaxo project, a validation survey with eight experts from academia and industry, and a test of SHCTaxo on a sample document were conducted, which demonstrate that this taxonomy is easy to navigate, effectively classified and representative in general.
