This work presents a programme of "spiritual exercises" the examination of conscience, meditation, contemplation and other methods of prayer, and goes on to offer instructions about how the exercises can be adapted to individual needs and difficulties. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) is the founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He lived and worked in Spain, and entered the religious life after a distinguished military career.
