It is a known fact in the South that there is nothing faster or more exciting than a chainsaw fight. I learned this Labor Day morning about 3: 30 a.m.ain 1961 in the infield at Darlington Raceway just before the Southern 500awhen I saw two local boys argue about who had the ugliest girlfriend. They settled the argument with chainsaws. A crowd of about 500 encircled the combatants. It reminded me of ancient Romeas coliseum. No one was hurt and the two left the area arm in arm with cold beers in their spare hands. Much of growing up in the South in the 1950s and 1960s was a daily adventure of some kind. This one happened to be the funniest I can remember. All of the stories collected here are more or less true; all of the characters are.
