Doctors Frank Cola and Ron Sundeen were coasting through their internships at Oakland regional hospital in 1970 when their training was interrupted by the appearance of Col. Brock Lee Spears looking to sign up doctors for the "Berry Plan" to join the military. Soon both doctors were "obligated volunteers" on their way to basic training at Fort Sam Houston and then to their assignment at Phuc Yu Vietnam. The motto of the army medical corps was "to preserve the fighting strength", but both doctors quickly learned that the motto should be changed as they waged war on the VD and not the VC in Vietnam.
