The assertiveness of the Islamic ethos in many parts of the world since the 1970s is a reality witnessed in many countries, particularly those with sizeable Muslim populations and Malaysia is no exception. This study attempts to assess the Islamization process in Malaysia, with special reference to two key issues, i.e., firstly, whether or not contemporary Islamic developments there signal the beginnings, if not the probability, of Malaysia becoming an "Islamic state, " and secondly, the relevance and feasibility of such a political option for governing Malaysia.
