The Law Society Of Northern Ireland is responsible for the provision of civil legal aid and advice, as well as for the machinery for the payment of fees and outlays in respect of criminal legal aid in the region. This is the 37th annual report of the Society which covers its activities and those of the Legal Aid Department for the year 2001/02 and contains information on legal aid costs, volumes and trends; performance against targets; and support services The report notes that funding difficulties encountered during the year have affected progress towards clearing the backlog of work and achieving performance targets.
