Volume 1 of 2. Cooper's epic historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature that immersed the reader in an already-vanishing world of forest woodcraft, exotic wildlife, and tangled or even hostile relations between European powers and native Americans. In two volumes the complete series of five novels is collected, following the order of the stories' internal chronology (rather than historical publication order). Volume I contains The Deerslayer and The Last of the Mohicans. Volume II contains The Pathfinder, The Prairie, and The Pioneers.
