“And They’re Off” is a touching memoir crafted with true passion and spirit to reflect the intimate human bonds which grow stronger along the passage of tough times. Forced to leave Europe because of the Second World War, my family of four members were compelled to immigrate to Canada with the hope of better times! Canada was fresh and bright, offering everything needed to start over. However our hopes were soon crushed by our father’s addiction. It took away our chances to live a normal life. We were always on the move, playing hide ‘n seek with creditors was the norm, frequently collecting our belongings thrown out of houses by angry landlords. Though life was a living hell, I refused to give up on hope. I always believed that we each have the tools within us to weather whatever gets thrown at us if we dig deep enough to uncover them. Hanging onto the desire for a stable life, I pulled out of the maelstrom and succeeded to carve out a successful, productive, and safe life for myself, through guts and hard work but always with humour and love. I found that I became an inspiration for my family and friends. My life story is about survival through hardships that eventually were rewarded with happiness and success in spite of the adversities life threw at me.
