The mathematical theory of obstacle problems has been extensively researched over the last years. The obstacle problem is a typical example of the elliptic variational inequality. Many important problems, such as the torsion of an elastic-plastic cylinder, the Stefan problem can be formulated by transformation to an obstacle problem. This book aims at the theoretical research and the numerical analysis of elliptic obstacle problems.
