This volume describes the level of mortality in the European Community for 8 conditions, half of them cancers, from 1980-1984 from which death should be avoidable given appropriate and timely medical intervention. The conditions chosen for this volume are relevant both to all the EC member countries as well as internationally and reflect important aspects of health care provision. The Atlas illustrates variation in mortality rates. This second volume of the Atlas, individually or together with the first, provides a comprehensive statistical profile of health service delivery designed to stimulate countries to initiate detailed inquiries into the functioning of health services. Future collaboration between health services researchers is hoped for. As more diseases become curable or preventable, so the reasons for differing efficiency can be highlighted so that the better systems may be emulated.
