A curatorial collaboration between National Gallery Singapore; The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; and The Japan Foundation Asia Center, 'Awakenings' investigates how radical artists making experimental art acted as catalysts for change during one of Asia's most turbulent periods: the 1960s to 1990s. Such upheavals were a clarion call for interrogation, leading artists to question the structures of art and the rapidly shifting societies around them. This densely illustrated catalogue unpacks the propositions of the exhibition with nine scholarly essays, while curatorial features contextualise the critical art movements and artist groups of the time.
