A work of biological theory, the author delivers a non-Darwinian account of the origin and subsequent evolutionary elaboration of lifeforms in order to promote the cardinal role played by behaviour in the potentiation of epigenic elaboration. The text includes generous references to facilitate further or independent examination of the proffered thesis. Particular attention is afforded to the analyses published by Jacob von Uexküll and Antonio Lima-de-Faria.
