Presents proceedings of a symposium held to: review the state of the art in wildland fire fighting foam research, development, and application; to assess progress in foam research, development, and application since 1988; to identify and prioritise needs and/or areas for future work; and to make appropriate recommendations for action. Topics of symposium papers include characterisation of fire foams, foam research projects, enhanced water fire suppression, evaluation of effectiveness of retardant and foam composites, use of fire control foam in wildland fire management in various countries, utilisation of foam with water scooping aircraft, ecological impacts of fire protection, environmental implications of fire fighting chemicals, and toxicity of fire retardants to wildlife and aquatic organisms.
