Housewife Eve Kendall (Steadman) accuses a young laborer, David Armstrong (McGregor), who is working at her home of raping her. James Kavanagh Q.C, (Thaw) is called upon to represent and defend the alleged rapist throughout the trial. Outside the courtroom, Kavanagh is facing a traumatic time at home. The acclaim he enjoys in his chosen profession has been at the expense of his home life, as he and his wife Lizzie (Harrow), come to terms with her affair with another barrister.
