This research report sets out the findings of a comparative study of child pedestrian accidents and exposure to risk in Britain, France and the Netherlands, completed in 1999. The aim of the research was to examine the differences in exposure and accident rates of 5-15 year olds within similar road environments, to identify the factors causing higher accident rates in Britain and to assess the policy implications. Topics discussed include: total exposure and road environment; variations by age and gender, ethnicity, housing and socio-economic background; journeys to school and visiting friends; playing or hanging about on the streets; factors affecting accident severity; and comparisons with findings from other British studies.
