Mitchell Morgan, an American graduate student in history travels to Germany and France in 1939 and 1940 to improve his foreign language skills. In the process, he attends a Wagner Opera in Munich, bike rides across France, is rescued from the beaches at Dunkirk and almost loses his life in the London bombing blitz. He enjoys romantic interludes as he makes his way form Germany to France and England. After the war, he returns to Europe with a faculty colleague to retrace his escape route and learn of the consequences of the war for those who touched his life. In the shadows of the White Cliffs of Dover, Mitch finds closure and realizes that he was a casualty of the war like the millions of others who experienced the excitement and turmoil of World War II.
